Why use this calculator?

Accurate marginal-rate maths

Most calculators apply a flat rate. This one correctly stacks your side-hustle profit on top of your salary to find the exact bands it crosses — the only way to get the right answer.

No sign-up, no email capture

Nothing you enter leaves your browser. Your inputs are saved locally so the calculator remembers your figures if you return. No accounts, no data collection.

Plain English, no jargon

Every result comes with a clear explanation of what was calculated and why. Links to the relevant HMRC guidance pages so you can verify every figure yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay tax on my side hustle income?
If your total trading income from all side activities is £1,000 or less in a tax year, it is covered by the trading allowance and you do not owe any tax. Above £1,000, you must register for Self Assessment and pay income tax on your profit at your marginal rate.
What is the trading allowance?
The trading allowance is a £1,000 tax-free amount that applies to income from self-employment, selling goods or providing services. It covers all your trading activities combined — not per platform. If your costs are higher than £1,000, you can claim those instead.
When do I need to register for Self Assessment?
If your gross side-hustle income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, you must register by 5 October following the end of that tax year. For 2026/27 income, the deadline is 5 October 2027. File your return by 31 January 2028.
Does HMRC know about my Vinted or Etsy sales?
Yes. Since January 2024, online platforms including Vinted, Etsy, eBay, Airbnb and Uber are required to report seller earnings to HMRC under OECD digital platform reporting rules. If you earn over €2,000 or make 30 or more sales per year, your data has been shared.
Can I deduct expenses from my side hustle income?
Yes. You can deduct allowable business expenses — materials, postage, platform fees, equipment — or use the £1,000 trading allowance instead. The calculator automatically picks whichever gives you the lower tax bill. You cannot claim both.
